N&G Groundworks BlOG

Palmer's Meadow Bridport | Infrastructure for 33 New Homes

Coordination, planning, and delivery

On a housing development, the groundwork phase dictates how smoothly everything else runs. Levels, drainage capacity, service routes and retaining solutions need to work together long after handover.

At Palmer’s Meadow in Bridport, N&G Groundworks delivered the full infrastructure package for a 33-home scheme, coordinating key disciplines under one programme so plots could progress safely and predictably.

Setting the site for construction

Earthworks that create buildable platforms

The scheme began with earthworks, including reduce-level excavations and off-site disposal of surplus excavated material. With a sloping site, formation accuracy is an important early consideration, as it drives drainage falls, road build-ups and finished surface levels.

Our teams worked from agreed datums and sequencing so haul routes, stockpiles and working areas stayed organised, which kept plant movements safe and reduced downtime on site. This gave follow-on trades reliable set-out points, reduced rework, and supported clean interfaces with drainage and sub-structure works.

Sub-structure works across the plots

Foundations and masonry up to DPC

From formation, the focus moved to foundation construction and sub-structure delivery across the plots. Works included foundations, beam and block flooring and sub-structure block and brickwork up to DPC level, aligned with structural requirements and plot sequencing.

These imperative stages set tolerances for everything above, so excavation dimensions, reinforcement placement and masonry accuracy were controlled closely. Our teams coordinated inspections and handovers between activities, which helped keep plot progress consistent and reduced the risk of corrective work later.

Drainage and SuDs delivery

Adopted sewers, attenuation and permeable driveways

N&G installed adopted sewers and private drainage as part of the site-wide foul & surface water drainage service, with systems built for long-term performance. The scheme incorporated attenuation tanks and permeable driveways to support the SuDs strategy, which required close coordination with levels, roads and service routes.

Where adopted elements are involved, compliance and approvals must be planned early, and our experience with sewer requisitions – Wessex Water approved works supports a smooth connection, testing and reinstatement process.

Wet well pumping station installation

A reliable foul solution for a sloped site

The site’s falls meant gravity alone could not serve the whole development, so N&G constructed a wet well pumping station and coordinated the required testing and attendance for the foul pumping main.

The wet well installation was treated as core infrastructure, built for access, reliability and long service life. Getting the civils, interfaces and commissioning sequence right at this stage protects performance once the homes are occupied. It also reduces the likelihood of programme drag caused by late changes or rework around critical below-ground assets.

Retaining and structural concrete works

Keeping the development stable and buildable

Sloped developments often rely on retaining solutions to unlock plots and maintain stability. At Palmer’s Meadow, N&G delivered RC in-situ retaining walls as part of the structural package, creating safe buildable areas and supporting overall sequencing.

Such works align with retaining structures, where engineering design, reinforcement detailing, formwork and concrete quality all influence long-term performance. Retaining elements were coordinated with plot levels and drainage interfaces so the site could progress without compromising access, safety or finished appearance.

External finishes for handover

Surfaces built to stand up to daily use

As plots neared completion, attention shifted to external areas that residents will use every day. N&G delivered external works and finishes to suit the scheme, coordinating kerbs, edges, access chambers and surface falls so drainage and surfacing worked together.

Where surfacing formed part of the scope, the same standards apply as Asphalt surfacing & external finishings – tidy set-out, strong edges and levels that match the design intent.
